My Favourite Sketching Supplies Essential for Every Artist.
Share
As an artist and educator, I believe that the tools we choose to create with are as important as the inspiration that drives us. Over the years, I've experimented with a variety of sketching supplies, and today I want to share my go-to favorites that help bring my artistic visions to life.
1. Graphite Pencils
Staedtler Mars Lumograph( recommend to my students beginners/advanve)
Another favorite is the Staedtler Mars Lumograph series. Known for their break-resistant leads, these pencils offer consistent quality, making them ideal for both beginners and advanced artists. They are perfect for detailed work and achieving a wide range of tonal values.
Derwent Graphic Pencils
For any sketching project, a reliable set of graphite pencils is indispensable. I particularly love the Derwent Graphic Pencils for their smooth application and range of hardness from 9H to 9B. They provide the perfect balance of softness for shading and hardness for fine details.
2. Charcoal
General's Charcoal Pencils
Charcoal is fantastic for achieving deep, rich blacks and expressive marks. I often use General's Charcoal Pencils, which come in different grades, allowing for varied texture and intensity in my sketches. They are particularly useful for life drawing and expressive portraits.
Willow and Vine Charcoal Sticks
For a more traditional charcoal experience, I turn to Willow and Vine Charcoal Sticks. Their organic feel and ability to produce bold, sweeping lines make them a joy to work with. They are excellent for gestural drawing and large-scale works.
3. Colored Pencils
Prismacolor Premier
When it comes to colored pencils, Prismacolor Premier pencils are a staple in my toolkit. Their creamy texture and vibrant pigments blend seamlessly, allowing for rich, layered effects. They are perfect for detailed illustrations and adding a pop of color to sketches.
Faber-Castell Polychromos
I also adore Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils for their oil-based leads, which provide a unique smoothness and durability. They are great for achieving fine details and subtle gradations in color. These pencils are particularly useful in my classes, where I teach advanced techniques in colored pencil work.
4. Erasers
Tombow Mono Eraser
A good eraser is just as important as the pencils. The Tombow Mono Eraser is my top choice for precision erasing. Its fine tip allows for detailed corrections without smudging, making it ideal for refining sketches and adding highlights.
Kneaded Eraser
For more flexible erasing needs, a kneaded eraser is a must-have. It can be molded into any shape, making it perfect for lifting graphite and charcoal in a controlled manner. It's great for creating highlights and subtle gradients.
5. Sketchbooks
Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Paper Pad, Vellum, Tape Bound.
This smooth, heavyweight paper is ideal for detailed drawings and works well with graphite, charcoal, and pen.
6. Additional Tools
Blending Stumps and Tortillons
To achieve smooth transitions and soften edges, blending stumps and tortillons are invaluable. They are great for blending graphite, charcoal, and colored pencils, allowing for a polished finish to your work.
Fixatives
To preserve sketches and prevent smudging, a good fixative is essential. I use Krylon Workable Fixatif for its ability to protect drawings while still allowing for further work on the piece. It’s a reliable choice for both graphite and charcoal drawings.
These are just a few of my favorite sketching supplies that I use regularly in my own art practice and teaching at Monica's Palette. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, investing in quality materials can significantly enhance your creative process and the final outcome of your artwork.
